The Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, TIMN is one of the six departments in the Faculty of Engineering. We conduct education and research in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Marine Engineering, Mathematics, Physics and Statistics. The Systems Engineering group conducts research, e.g., to improve remote sensing systems investigating events on our planet and in its atmosphere. Our group has focused on signal processing of high-resolution radars and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) radio occultation (RO). This project is conducted in a well-established partnership with Beyond Gravity Sweden (BGS) AB which started more than six years ago. BGS has recently started the development of its first satellite mission, Radio Occultation Service (RoocS), which aims to provide atmospheric measurements using the GNSS-RO technique. In 2020, a unique experiment was performed where the tracking capabilities of the Meteorological Operational satellite (MetOp-A) were extended to cover higher altitudes in the atmosphere. These measurements are an important starting point for this project. The research in this collaborative project intends to improve the upcoming generation of GNSS-RO systems, which will support a better characterization of the Earth’s atmosphere. The project is funded by the Swedish National Space Agency (Rymdstyrelsen).
Work description
The aim of the research project is to develop new methods and improve the retrieval process in RO systems. The PhD candidate will focus on signal processing of RO measurements, inversion algorithms and wave propagation simulation through the atmosphere. The research results are going to support the development of methods for Space Weather monitoring and ionospheric modelling. Besides performing research in this project’s scope, the position includes also other research activities in other department’s research projects, teaching activities, and/or other departmental duties.
