Luleå University of Technology is one of Europe’s leading universities in mining and metallurgy. The University offers a unique opportunity for developing, comprehensive research skills throughout the mining chain - from exploration, mining, processing and metal production, to recovery after completing mining activities. We are now locking for a senior lecturer to strengthen our team on rock mechanics.
Subject description
Mining and Rock Engineering comprises mining technology, rock engineering and rock mechanics, including rock mass properties, design of rock excavations and tunneling as well as planning and production processes related to both mining and civil engineering.
Duties
Senior lecturers (equivalent to assistant professor positions at other universities) have to conduct research, research supervision, and teaching within relevant areas of the research subject. Particular emphasis is on applied research in our subject, so good relations with Swedish and International mining and mineral industries are important.
Senior lecturers are also expected to contribute to the university's development, i.e. to contribute to obtaining external funding to the subject, to communicate research outcomes via academic publications, and to participate in managerial and administrative tasks.
The duties of senior lecturers also include teaching for the educational programmes of Civil Engineering and Master of Sciences in Mining and Geotechnical Engineering.
Qualifications
Qualified for an appointment as senior lecturer are those who:
- have been awarded a doctoral degree or have equivalent scientific qualifications;
- have demonstrated teaching expertise;
- have completed courses in higher education pedagogy corresponding to 7.5 credits or otherwise have acquired equivalent knowledge.

Other assessment criteria (listed in order of importance):
- At least a PhD in Rock Mechanics, Mining or Civil Engineering with specialisation in Rock Mechanics or similar
- Experience in international research cooperation
- The ability to collaborate with the wider community
- The ability to communicate research and development work
- Excellence in oral and written English
- Experience in numerical modelling, rock dynamics and wave propagation in rock mass, rockburst mechanism and rockburst risk mitigation and design of rock support for mass mining at great depth
