The Department is employing a Professor and Head of Subject to continue to lead, strengthen and develop the research within Applied Geophysics.
The subject Applied Geophysics focuses on examining the structure and dynamics of the earth with studies of physical phenomena such as the earth's magnetic field, gravity field, electrical conductivity, seismic wave propagation speed and thermal conductivity. As the rocks and the loose deposits often have different physical properties, such as magnetic properties, density, elastic properties, electrical or thermal conductivity, models created by the distribution of physical properties can be translated into models of geological structures.
The research within Applied Geophysics has its focus on exploration-related issues. This includes exploration for mineral and water resources, which is a growing problem in Sweden and not least internationally. It also includes environmentally-related problems with a focus on pollution and challenges with planning and permits/conditions for facilities in the ground. A substantial part of the research that the group conducts is aimed at developing prospecting methods for mineral deposits, as well as modeling the upper parts of the bedrock in known ore areas together with other experts at the department.
Subject description
Applied Geophysics includes studies of how the laws and methods of physics can be used to understand the properties of bedrock and soil deposits. This includes development and applications of methods for exploration and investigation of natural resources such as mineral deposits and water, as well as investigation of environmental and infrastructural related issues.
Duties
The position as professor/head of subject includes an overall responsibility to lead and develop the subject, which comprises research and first-, second- and third-cycle education.
The professor/head of subject also has a particular responsibility to ensure the funding of the activities and contacts with the wider community. An important task is to build a strong research subject where doctoral students, staff and students grow.
