Director of Commercial Analysis
Role Description
RWE is looking for Director, Commercial Analysis to join our team, Commercial Analysis Americas. This role covers the analysis of all renewable technologies (Onshore & Offshore wind, Solar PV, Batteries) and several commodities (power, fuels, green certificates) in the North American power markets in which RWE Renewables are active.
Commercial Analysis is responsible to provide commercial steering to the company’s major financial decisions such as investment, acquisition, divestment, PPA execution, commodity trading etc. to fulfill the growth plan of RWE Renewables, 50 billion Euros and 50 GW RES capacity by 2030.
The position requires deep understanding of power market fundamentals, a high affinity for numerical models, handling of large amount of data. Furthermore, delivering key message to top management and major stakeholders is the integral part of the tasks. You will be part of a highly dynamic, international and diverse team which comes along with occasional travel, working remotely and demonstrating a pro-active and autonomous approach to work. Based on the progress, it could potentially lead to the leadership position within the team.
Responsibilities
Analyze the short / medium / long-term development of the U.S. Western Interconnection power markets based on a thorough understanding of market fundamentals, regulatory development, renewable penetration, storage growth, etc., then develop the key beliefs for the markets
Derive the revenue streams and evaluate investment opportunities for all RES (onshore wind, offshore wind, and solar) and new technologies like battery storage and power-to-hydrogen assets from fundamental and commercial perspectives
Steer major financial decisions (e.g. FIDs, M&A, etc.) for renewable energy assets based on clear and strong commercial strategies. Manage internal processes, and deliver / align key commercial messages throughout the organizations.
Evaluate Offtake RFP and Auction Strategy (especially for Offshore Sea Bed Lease). Understand RFP or Auction rules and offtake structures, quantify key commercial risks & opportunities, and develop the competitive bidding / negotiation strategies
Build strong relationships with key internal stakeholders including Development, Finance, Regulatory Affairs, Strategy, and Power Modeling teams in the U.S. and Europe. Also train / guide junior members of the team and lead them to grow further.
Requirements
Knowledge of US power markets and experience with the economics of renewable energy sources.
Excellent understanding of power market fundamentals and commodity market and price risks. Experience in production cost modeling (e.g., PLEXOS, PROMOD, Aurora) is helpful.
Strong Excel skills, i.e., should be able to use functionalities at an expert level. Programming skills (e.g., Python) are also highly advantageous.
Excellent quantitative skills, paying attentions to detail but not losing big picture, ability to deduce the key messages from complex datasets
Strong communication skills with important stakeholders including senior management, and the ability to work in a diverse, international team
Minimum of ten years industrial or academic research experiences in power and commodity markets
Master’s degree or PhD in an analytical / numerical subject, preferably Economics, Engineering, Science, Mathematics or similar quantitative areas
