The role and departement
The Commercial Analysis (CA) department provides detailed commercial insights, market analysis and analytical support service to the RWE Renewables business for all renewable technologies across the globe. Our objective is to support the acceleration to Net Zero by steering the Renewables business towards markets, technologies and monetization concepts with highest commercial value. Based on that, CA ensures full optimization and maximization of the revenue streams of our assets and improves the business competitiveness of RWE Renewables. The scope of the role covers the electricity markets in Europe and includes the modelling of auctions for different renewable technologies (e.g. offshore, onshore, PV, battery storage, hydrogen and hybrid combinations of the mentioned technologies). The position requires a high affinity for numerical work as well as handling large amounts of data and can therefore also include programming tasks. You will be part of a highly dynamic, international and geographically diverse team which comes along with occasional international travel, working remotely and demonstrating a pro-active and autonomous approach to work. CA explicitly promotes intra and inter departmental cooperation to guarantee our employees access to the full scope of activities a global player like RWE can offer (e.g. job shadowing / job rotation in other regions / continents and departments).
Principal Accountabilities
- Responsibility for full commercial support of various decision-making processes (investment decisions, bid pricing, M&A projects)
- Carrying out complex revenue modelling, plant-specific commercial analyses and determining strategic commercial indications for all renewable energy technologies in line with RWE Renewables' requirements
- Collection, processing and analysis of all relevant data needed as input for business models, with special focus on electricity prices, balancing energy costs, market values / prices to be applied, curtailment, ancillary services and subsidy schemes as well as various commodities (electricity, fuels, CO2, green certificates)
- Support and implementation of tendering strategies in different auctions (e.g. CfD auctions for all RE and storage technologies, including leasing auctions and beauty contests etc.)
- Portfolio analysis for all RE technologies and countries to assess potential synergies within the RWE portfolio.
- Supporting the strategy and regulatory team in looking at current and future market and regulatory scenarios used for the commercial assessment of renewable assets
- Provide ad-hoc market analysis reports in the event of market disruptions such as the current conflict in Ukraine, the coronavirus crisis or regulations forcing revenue cuts
- The Senior Commercial Market Analyst may take responsibility for specific commercial workstreams in cross-departmental projects
Knowledge and Skills - Essential
- Degree in an analytical / numerical subject, preferably engineering, economics, statistics or mathematics in combination with at least three years of relevant professional experience in revenue modelling or quantifying the impact of changes in the regulatory framework and energy market design on the revenue side
- Experience in renewable energy economics (e.g. development of value factors / prices to be applied, ancillary services and revenues from support mechanisms) and a very good understanding of the different revenue streams for renewables and battery storage (including the specifics of RE support schemes, PPAs, capacity market eligibility, markets for control services, etc.) as well as a good understanding of the different revenue streams for renewables and battery storage (including the specifics of RE support schemes, PPAs, capacity market eligibility, markets for control services, etc.)
- Very good Excel skills, i.e. expert level use of functionalities
- The ability to communicate clearly and in a customer-oriented manner, to structure complex information appropriately and to present it to an audience at (senior) management level (both in writing and verbally)
- Experience with cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary projects and the ability to deal with uncertainties arising therein
- Strong initiative e.g. in identifying opportunities to add value and initiating solutions
- A high level of energy and enthusiasm when it comes to learning new things, pushing technical boundaries and finding solutions, while also thinking unconventionally or out-of-the-box
Knowledge and Skills - Desirable
- Fluency in German language
- Experience in fundamental market modelling
- Familiar with different offshore auction designs (e.g. beauty contest, leases, CfD) and the current German framework
- Familiar with the Monte Carlo simulation approach. Good knowledge of typical derivatives used in energy markets to hedge financial positions
- Openness to or experience with programming and/or optimisation languages, e.g. Python, database management (e.g. Access) and ability to develop, document and maintain models
