As a Senior Legal Counsel within our international legal team you will focus on RWE Renewables’ Japan, South Korean and Asian offshore projects.
As RWE’s first legal point of contact, you will:
1. advise the projects you are working on in your area of expertise;
and
2. develop inhouse legal opinions and coordinate external legal advice as necessary for your projects.
Your role will focus on:
Regulatory
- Advising the business on national and international legislation relating to seabed, seabed allocation as well as subsidy and offtake regulations
- Advise on grid connection matters, negotiate grid connection related agreements and provide legal advise in case of disruption of the grid connection
- Advising the business on offshore tender legislation; contribute to the preparation of tender bids and sign them off from the legal point of view
- Advising the business on offshore wind (both fixed and floating bottom) guidelines, identifying possible risks and working closely with our Regulatory Affairs team to develop and promote RWE’s regulatory position regarding regulated guidelines
- Advising on other specific electricity legislation and regulation, including engagement with regulators and market operators
- Evaluating the impact of global green policies on the business and working closely with our Regulatory Affairs, Strategy and Communications departments
Planning, Consenting, Permitting
- Advising the business on permitting and environmental legal topics, as well as working with expert advisors on obtaining permits and other consents required for the development, construction and/or operation of offshore renewables projects
- Developing, assessing and coordinating permitting strategies, as well as overlooking project development legal paths
- Handling permitting procedures and supervising obtaining consents
Real estate
- Advising the business on onshore real estate and property law matters, for example relating to substations or project offices and storage locations
- Supporting the business to secure port facilities and other infrastructure facilities
Legal support
- Act as RWE`s first point of contact for regulatory legal advice and coordinating specialised inhouse and external legal advice in a cost effective and efficient manner
- Establishing and maintaining the projects’ compliance with applicable laws and regulations throughout the projects’ lifetime
- Providing ad hoc support to development activities of the Renewables Offshore team
- Keeping oversight of all legal matters relating to projects, including advising senior management about all related legal risks, including claims and disputes
- Provide regulatory legal advice also in M&A and joint-venture transactions
- Manage organizational or coordination tasks, including process optimization initiatives
- Establish and nurture good and constructive working relationships with legal and business colleagues
We are looking for someone who has:
- graduated from law school with distinction in Japan and is eligible to be admitted to the local bar and has exceptional legal instinct
- thorough expertise at least in one of the following legal areas and an interest in becoming an expert in the others: Renewable Energy Regulatory matters, Permitting, Planning, Consenting, Real Estate, Infrastructure Projects, and/or Environmental Law
- at least 5 years of work experience in an energy practice group in an international law firm or a company, preferably in the renewables energy sector
- the ability to handle multiple tasks, take on new responsibilities and prioritize work in a dynamic environment
- the ability to stay on top on latest regulatory developments
- commercial and technical understanding of large industrial projects and good understanding how to best support them from the legal point of view
- excellent organizational, analytical and communication skills and a solution-oriented and positive mindset
- a high level of engagement, is a strong team contributor and is able to work individually and cross-functionally
- a fluent command of English, business level Japanese , and enjoys working in an international team and is open to some travel
- some project management or project leadership experience
