At Seco Tools we develop and offer advanced products and solutions that simplify cutting processing and we work with our customers to identify and implement the best solution for their needs.
Background and purpose
We’re a global market-leading manufacturer of cutting tools and tooling systems for metal machining applications. These cutting tools are usually made of cemented carbide, where the sintering process is the intermediate step in this manufacturing. It consolidates a green body coming from wet milling and spray drying process into a hard metal. Numerous material properties, microstructure design as well as shape and size of the inserts can be controlled and modified in the sintering process.
To achieve the highest quality, it is vital to understand and monitor the processes at every stage and predict any deviations that may occur. In addition, MVDA provides means for reducing waste, understanding, and taking appropriate actions of unwanted variations in the products, and consumption of resources. To achieve the highest quality, it is vital to understand and monitor the processes as well as to predict any deviations that may occur.
Work description
In this project, you will build up on our established MVDA in sintering, enhance our existing methods as well as get creative and find new innovative solutions to predict and analyze data from various type of sintering furnaces in Fagersta site. Various MVDA models will be explored with the Simca software package following the “golden”-batch strategy. The objective is to establish a correlation between the furnace's process parameters and the metallurgical quality (including structural and chemical properties) of the sintered material, enabling early prediction to prevent potential failures. These models, along with their quality predictors, will undergo thorough evaluation and testing in the production process using the Simca online production tool.

Student background
You’re preferably a master’s student within the field of Chemistry, Materials Science or Production Technology. Previous experience in MVDA is meritorious but not mandatory. Since we’re a global business, you have excellent communication skills in English, both in writing and in speaking.
Duration of project
The work consists of 30 credits and may start in the beginning of 2024. The position is placed in Fagersta, Sweden. Initially, you will undergo training in Simca which is used for MVDA approach.
