At Sandvik Coromant, we work with engineering in various components of metal cutting, and coolant strategy is one such vital component. In this project, we like to develop the coolant application using modern simulation models. For you, who have gained knowledge in the field of solid and fluid mechanics, this work allows you to test your theoretical understandings in real life.
Background and scope of the project
Cutting tool design consists of components – such as insert shape design, chip breaker design, and clamping mechanism design. One other critical component in a modern advanced machining system is the design of a coolant system. In this novel insert design, both the insert geometry and the coolant strategy need to be taken into consideration and make it a multivariable optimization problem.
The work aims to develop a fundamental understanding of a new insert design for product development. It involves setting up models of the insert design and/or cooling system and conducting simulations in this regard. The numerical models will be evaluated using experimental investigation at Sandvik Coromant’s test facility in Sandviken.
Work description
The project consists of:
Based on your interest, planning, and innovative thinking, the work can be modified without altering the end goal.
Duration of project
The thesis project lasts 20 weeks, starting in January or February 2024.
The location is Sandvik Coromant in Sandviken, Sweden.
Student background
We’re looking for someone studying Engineering Mechanics at an advanced level with an interest in both solid mechanics and fluid mechanics. Previous experience working with simulation tools such as Ansys or Fluent is highly desirable, with good theoretical understanding of the underlying principles of numerical modeling. A genuine interest in the field of metal cutting would make the work fascinating for you.
At Sandvik Coromant, we believe that diversity of experience, perspective, and background leads to a better environment for our employees, our business, and our customers. Now, we’re looking forward to meeting you!
