Seco in Fagersta is offering a master’s thesis project within the R&D Materials Development group focusing on material science and electron microscopy investigation of cemented carbides for cutting tool applications.
Composite materials, consisting of hard ceramic phase, traditionally tungsten carbide, and a ductile binder phase, usually cobalt, are generally referred to as hard materials or cemented carbide. Cemented carbides are manufactured through a powder metallurgy processing route, which includes wet milling, spray drying, compaction, and sintering. With focus on sustainability and circularity in the production and the use of recycled cemented carbides we contribute to reducing environmental impact and promoting resource efficiency. Cemented carbides has an attractive combination of properties with high hardness and toughness. By adjusting grain size and binder content, properties can be tailored for specific applications.
In this project, you perform microstructure characterization using electron microscopy-based methods. By using advanced techniques, such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) you investigate the influence alloying elements on material properties, with a special focus on the correlation of contiguity (the network formed by WC grains) and the desired material properties.
We offer a great workplace with access to state-of-the-art R&D facilities and collaboration with a top-tier research team. Joining us, you get the chance to gain valuable knowledge and experience in material science, including the use of tools like SEM and EBSD and various materials characterization techniques.
The thesis project lasts for 20 weeks, and the start date is flexible and can be discussed with the student. On-site presence in Fagersta is mandatory, some work can be done virtually by agreement. Accommodation is provided, and the thesis project is compensated with a one-time payment.
We seek a highly motivated student studying Materials Science or related field. Curiosity, a planned approach to tasks and the ability to independently conduct lab work after training are essential. Prior lab experience is beneficial, as well as previous experience with SEM and EBSD. During the thesis completion, you present your findings orally and in a written report in English, so your English skills must be excellent.
