Seco is a global leader in manufacturing cutting tools and tooling systems för metal machining applications. These tools are primarily manufactured from cemented carbide and feature a hard coating layer applied by physical or chemical vapor deposition. The performance of a cutting tool in a specific machining operation depends also on the quality of edge preparation prior to the successive coating process. A proper edge preparation can result in a substantial reduction in cutting forces and temperatures during service, which in turn leads to lower surface roughness and reduced tensile stress states in the machined workpieces.
Today’s cutting tools demand even more advanced edge preparations, such as precise edge shaping and a high degree of edge line homogeneity, to ensure outstanding machining performance. Multi-axis brushing operations are widely regarded as the gold standard for edge preparation, offering a broad range of adjustable edge sizes and shapes. However, in an industrial environment, certain parameters may be limited to secure a smooth, efficient, and consistent edge honing process.
In this project, you investigate the influence of key edge preparation parameters within state-of-the-art industrial brushing equipment on the final edge parameters of cutting tools. Key parameters such as edge rounding size, edge shape factors and edge line homogeneity are analyzed. This research offers valuable insights that could lead to improved tool design.
Through a detailed characterization and a statistical analysis of the prepared edges, you refine and propose a set for the most impactful edge preparation parameters. The goal is to identify the optimal “sweet spot” of favorable edge characteristics that balances high performance with an economical and efficient industrial edge preparation process. In the final stage of your master thesis, you highlight the significance and potential of the relationships you have established between edge preparation parameters and edge shape. Your work will eventually lead to the creation of cutting tools featuring newly developed, specifically tailored cutting edges, which may drive innovations in manufacturing efficiency and tool endurance.
The location for this project is Fagersta, Sweden.
